Update and Here’s a Question for Ya

Jump to Comments

Okay, so today’s post (and by post I mean the one sentence I’m about to write here and slap up on the internet), is completely unrelated to the series of posts I’ve been doing. So, don’t try to draw any interesting paralells or find the missing link. K?

Quick update, though. I’ve officially started the agented author support group I talked about. So, if you are an agented writer and would like to join, please email me at chandler1986 (at) gmail (dot) com or you can comment on this post. Either one.

Now, for my question(s):

Are most authors women? If so, why?

  • See, I’ve noticed that too, but I don’t actually believe it’s true. I think it depends on what genre you’re looking at, and what reader/writer circles you travel in. There are a HUGE amount of men out there who write, especially SF, Fantasy, Nonfiction, cop/detetctive/serial killer types, and especially variations of the thriller: law/legal, military, war/ spy/espionage…..those aren’t technically genres, but you get my drift.

    I think there *might* be a slightly larger percentage of woman writers than men, but for the most part, I think it just depends on where you’re looking :)

    May I ask where you got the idea for this question?

  • Hmmm…well…the guest blogger from last post asked how everyone decided on their agent. And I remember when trying to decide who to go with emailing one of my writer friends and being like: Well, I always pictured having a woman agent.

    And it was hard to decide whether that was a legitimate concern (i.e. I felt more comfortable talking with a woman) or if it just so happened that most agents were women and so that’s how I pictured it. I’m pretty sure I had a very vivid image of having Miss Snark as my literary agent.

    Anyway, so I was thinking that to me, most authors I know are women. So, I figured I wanted to ask if this were true and if so why.

    So that’s where I got the idea for the question.

  • Hey Chan,

    I’d love to say us girlies are just so darn smart, but I must agree that I thing it’s a genre thing too. My husband is a die hard military, spy novel guy and everything he reads, and I mean virtually everything, is written by a man. It’s not that he wouldn’t buy a military novel written by a woman, it’s just that there are so few to choose from. I think they get lost in the shuffle, among all the blockbuster bestselling guys who write in this genre.

  • let me know when you need me.
